Portrait of Col. William Martin of Dixon Springs, Tennessee, son of General Joseph Martin, Revolutionary War officer and namesake of Martinsville, Virginia. Col. William Martin served in the Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee legislatures, was a Presidential elector in 1804 and 1808 as well as vice president of the Whig Convention of 1844. In the War of 1812, Martin was elected Lieutenant Colonel of the Second Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers. He was a pioneer of the frontier and is buried in the Martin family cemetery at Dixon Springs, Tennessee
