Painting ID::  61397
La rendicien de Breda (1634-1635, English: The Surrender of Breda) was inspired by Velazquez's first visit to Italy, in which he accompanied Ambrogio Spinola, who conquered the Dutch city of Breda a few years prior. This masterwork depicts a transfer of the key to the city from the Dutch to the Spanish army during the Siege of Breda. It is considered one of the best of Velezquez's paintings.

Wounded Soldiers Retrating from Russia
Painting ID::  62503
1814 Pencil, pen and brown ink, watercolour, 250 x 206 mm Mus?e des Beaux-Arts, Rouen In spite of his Classical schooling, G?ricault broke with traditional themes and forms to set the tone for the developments in French Romanticism. In this picture he took up the theme of a topical historical event. Exhausted almost to the point of death by hunger and cold, these wounded men struggle through a desert of ice. Far from glorifying the soldier's life, G?ricault depicted the misery of their extreme situation - an approach in tune with the spirit of his age. Hemicycle
Painting ID::  62862
1837 Encaustic wall painting ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris In 1837 Delaroche was given an important commission. It was to decorate the apse of the ecole des Beaux-Arts with a cycle of more than 70 of the most famous artists since Antiquity. This pantheon of art was known as the Hemicycle, and for decades it served artists from every country as a model of allegorical fresco painting. In the execution Delaroche went back to the antique technique of encaustic, and was the first artist to do so. This is a method in which hot melted wax is poured over the plaster, and it gives the painting a smooth quality that also repels damp. The German artist Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld used the same technique for the wall paintings in the Residenz in Munich which he executed for King Ludwig I. The picture shows the right side of the painting. Artist: DELAROCHE, Paul Title: Hemicycle (detail) , painting Date: 1801-1850 French : other

The Passion
Painting ID::  63717
1524-25 Oil on limewood, 39 x 31 cm (size of detail) Kunstmuseum, ?ffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basle The picture shows a detail of the scene Via Crucis. The background of the scene opens up as a broad landscape. The perspective effect of distance is achieved by traditional colourist means, with the foreground, centre ground, and background being clearly distinguished in brown, greenish, and blue tones respectively. Continuity is provided by a procession of riders and infantry, whose size diminishes steadily towards the background, taking the eye into the landscape.Artist:HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger Title: The Passion (detail) Painted in 1501-1550 , German - - painting : religious

The Scourge of the Serpents
Painting ID::  63766
The Scourge of the Serpents (detail) 1732-35 Oil on canvas, 164 x 1356 cm (complete frieze) Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice During the 1720s Giambattista Tiepolo developed a new colouristic style of painting derived in principle from the dazzling palette of Veronese and the no less brilliant one of Sebastiano Ricci. Rejecting the tenebrous colour of Piazzetta, we witness in Tiepolo the triumph of colour with a richness of resonance and counterpoint elaborated within the ordered and monumental composition. The great frieze, originally below the choir of the Venetian church of SS. Cosma and Damiani on the Giudecca (Zanetti 1771), is a fine example of Tiepolo's work of the 1730s. The painting in its ornate stucco frame decorated with fruit, flowers and leaves is over 13 metres long. Three episodes are depicted with a decorative illusionism contrasting with the declared realist-narrative intent, rendering the painting somewhat melodramatic effect.Artist:TIEPOLO, Giovanni Battista Title: The Scourge of the Serpents (detail) Painted in 1701-1750 , Italian - - painting : religious

Christ Carrying the Cross
Painting ID::  63767
1737-38 Oil on canvas, 450 x 517 cm Sant'Alvise, Venice The subject of the painting is Christ's carrying of the cross to the hill of Golgotha, which rises up in the centre of the picture as a tall rock, the crosses already erected upon it. Directly beneath it in the foreground we see Christ in a flame red robe. He has collapsed under the heavy weight of the cross. To the right, Veronica, holding the sudarium, turns away from the dramatic scene, visibly moved. To the left, the two thieves likewise condemned to crucifixion are being led forward. In the exact centre of the picture, between Christ's cross and the hill of Golgotha, and directly facing the viewer, are the figures of Jesus' disciples, together with Mary and Mary Magdalene. Brightly illuminated, they stand out symbolically from the other figures.Artist:TIEPOLO, Giovanni Battista Title: Christ Carrying the Cross Painted in 1701-1750 , Italian - - painting : religious
